As part of World Password Day, Google is hyping up its security achievements and sharing updates on its latest endeavors. The company revealed passkey adoption metrics for the first time and said they have been used more than one billion times by 400 million Google accounts. "Since launching, passkeys have proven to be faster than passwords, since they only require users to simply unlock their device using a fingerprint, face scan or pin to log in," Google wrote. Passkeys consist of two cryptographic keys, a public key that's registered with the online service or app, and a private key that's stored on a device, such as a smartphone or a computer. That might sound complicated, but passkeys have been designed to be easy to use. In fact, to log in with a passkey, you use your face, a fingerprint, or a PIN in much the same way that you unlock your smartphone. The login method essentially phases out old-school passwords for more of a smartphone-like experience when signing into your accounts. It's why Google describes passkey technology as "phishing resistant" since the private encryption keys are bound to the user's device, unlike a traditional password, which can be transmitted over the internet or guessed.
